Alan Haven

Posting on Facebook by Dave Allan, of We Love The Pirate Station - 29th April 2016:

I was saddened to learn today of the death of English jazz organist Alan Haven, more so because he died earlier this year in January and I seem to have missed the news.
Alan was known for his collaborations with John Barry in the James Bond films 'From Russia with Love' (1963) and 'Goldfinger' (1964), the comedy film 'A Jolly Bad Fellow' (1964), and in the Richard Lester film 'The Knack – and How to Get It' (1965). He released a single from the Lester film, but isperhaps best known for the single Image in 1965, which was frequently used as a theme tune on the offshore pirate radio station Radio Caroline and also featured in the 1965 horror film 'The Night Caller'.
During the late 1960's, I used to listen to the pirate radio station Radio Caroline and they often broadcast 'Image', and it became very much associated with the station. I didn't know what it was called back then or who was responsible for it. It was only some years later that I found out it was by Alan Haven and it was titled 'Image'.
I remember going down to Atkinson's Records in Sunderland's Atheneum Street and asking Tommy Atkinson to order a copy. It took weeks for it to finally arrive and when I eventually got it home and put it onto the turntable, I discovered the single was off centre! The only way I could play it was to remove the spacer from the middle and centre the disc manually. I could have taken it back, but it had taken so long to get hold of this copy that I decided to keep it... still got it in fact.
Anyway, wind on a good few years more and I'm trying to download it from iTunes, only it isn't available. After searching online, I find a link for Alan Haven and a website. There's a phone number and who should pick up the phone when I ring but Alan Haven himself! He came across as a really decent fella and spoke at some length about his music. I told him about my off-centre record and how I was trying to get an Mp3 copy: "No problem," he said, "just give me your e-mail address and I'll e-mail you a copy."
'Image' is a lush piece of music and so, so evocative of the 1960's. It's a piece of music that you're unlikely to hear today, but if like me you were growing up in the 1960's and especially if you tuned into Radio Caroline, then this would have been part of the soundtrack of your youth!
Thanks Alan, for the both the music and the memories (and not least the free Mp3 file!).

Alan Haven (1 April 1935 – 7 January 2016) RIP
